How to Make the Most of a BJJ Seminar
Register Early
Popular instructors book out fast. Most Swiss academies post announcements 4–8 weeks in advance on Instagram and their websites. Following local gyms directly is the best way to stay informed.
Prepare Specific Questions
A seminar is a rare opportunity to ask questions your regular instructor may not have an answer to. Come with a specific position or problem in mind — instructors appreciate engaged students and often tailor portions of the seminar to the group's needs.
Take Notes After, Not During
Writing notes during a seminar breaks flow for you and those around you. Instead, run through the material in your head immediately afterward and write detailed notes at home while it is still fresh. Short video clips (where permitted by the instructor) can also help with retention.
Train at the Host Gym Afterward
If you're visiting a gym for a seminar, try to stay for the open mat that often follows. Rolling with unfamiliar training partners after learning new material is one of the fastest ways to internalize technique.
